Understanding Concussion Treatment
A concussion is a form of mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) caused by a blow to the head, face, or body that creates force through the brain.
You do not have to lose consciousness to have a concussion. In fact, many concussions happen without an athlete ever being “knocked out.”
Concussions are considered functional injuries, meaning they affect how the brain works rather than causing structural damage that usually appears on a standard CT scan or MRI.
Because concussion symptoms can vary widely from person to person, proper evaluation is essential. Two athletes can experience similar hits and have very different symptoms and recovery timelines.

Symptoms
Concussion symptoms can affect the body, brain, mood, and sleep.
When to Seek Treatment
A suspected concussion should be evaluated as soon as possible.
You should seek prompt evaluation if:
You hit your head or sustained a significant blow to the body and now have concussion symptoms
Symptoms worsen over time
You have persistent headache, dizziness, or brain fog
You are having trouble with school, work, or physical activity after the injury
Symptoms are lasting more than 1–2 weeks
Emergency medical attention is needed if there is:
Loss of consciousness lasting more than 30 seconds
Repeated vomiting
Seizure activity
Worsening confusion
Significant neck pain
Weakness or numbness
